THUMBNAIL SIDE BORDER

Toadies Filter

A graphic of your choice.
The graphic I have used is used with permission from Nene Thomas who has kindly allowed me to use her artwork in my tutorials.

If you have everything you need, let’s begin.


  1. Open your graphic and resize if needed. Shift + D to duplicate and close the original.

  2. In your layer palette, right click and promote background to layer.

  3. Selections, select all.

  4. Selections, modify, contract by 20.

  5. Selections, modify, feather, and use a setting of 15.

  6. Edit, copy.

  7. Edit, paste as new image.

  8. Go back to our original image and hit the back button 2 times.

  9. Edit, copy.

  10. You can now close this image off.

  11. Back to our feathered graphic.

  12. Image, canvas size and use the following settings:-

    • Width:      1024
    • Height:      Total length of your graphic.
    • Placement:      Left middle arrow.

  13. Selections, select all.

  14. Add a new layer. Edit, paste into selection.

  15. Deselect. Layers, arrange, send to bottom.

  16. Effects, Plugins, Toadies, Look, Butthead, a TV! And use the following settings:-

    • Total Scanline Width:      13
    • Underline Width:      128
    • Underline Shading:       115
    • Underline Alpha:      69

  17. Edit, repeat Look, Butthead, a TV!

  18. Effects, Image Effects, Seamless Tiling and use the following settings:-

    • Corner checked.
    • Bidirectional checked.
    • Curved checked
    • Transition:      100

  19. Highlight the top layer.

  20. Layers, Duplicate.

  21. Image, resize and resize by 50%, all layers unchecked.

  22. Selections, select all.

  23. Selections, float.

  24. Selections, defloat.

  25. Selections, modify, contact by 20.

  26. Selections, modify, feather and use a setting of 15.

  27. Selections, invert and hit the delete key.

  28. Deselect.

  29. Using your mover tool, move this graphic slightly up and out a little.

  30. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow and use the following settings:-

    • Vertical:       0
    • Horizontal:      4
    • Opacity:       85
    • Blur:      2
    • Color:      Black
    • Shadow on new layer:      Unchecked.

  31. Repeat drop shadow but change your horizontal to –4 (minus).

  32. Lower the opacity of raster 1 to around 80%, or similar to make it a little lighter than the smaller graphic.

  33. Lower the opacity of your background layer to around 30%.

  34. Highlight the bottom layer.

  35. Adjust, Sharpness, Sharpen.

  36. Add a new layer for your watermark.

  37. Layers, Arrange, bring to top.

  38. Merge all flatten.
