STRAW WALL SIDE BORDER



This tutorial is my own creation. Any resemblance to another is purely co-incidental. Please do not copy, translate or place on any other site. You are more than welcome to use this tutorial in a group setting, but please link to this page only.


Tools needed to complete this tutorial:

Paint Shop Pro V 9

A graphic of your choice.

If you have everything you need let's begin.


  1. Open your graphic of choice.

    Note: Graphics that are longer than they are wide will work best for this tutorial.

  2. Using your eye dropper chose two complimenting colours from your graphic. One light, one dark.

  3. Windows, duplicate and minimize your duplicate image for now.

  4. Image, add border and add a 2 pixel border using your darkest color.

  5. Select the border with your magic wand. If the color you have chosen is also on the outside of your graphic, you may need to go to selections, selection all. Selections, modify, Contract by 2. Selections invert.

  6. Effects, 3D Effects, drop shadow and use the following settings:-

    1. Vertical & Horizontal:      2
    2. Opacity:      100
    3. Blur:      15
    4. Color:      Black

    5. Repeat drop shadow changing your vertical and horizontal to –2 (minus).

    6. Deselect.

    7. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    8. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    9. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    10. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    11. Image, Add border and add a 4 pixel white border.

    12. Select your white border with the magic wand.

    13. Click on your minimized graphic, edit, copy.

    14. Back to our framed image, edit, paste into selection.

    15. Deselect.

    16. Image, add border and add a 2 pixel border using your darkest color.

    17. Select the border with your magic wand. If the color you have chosen is also on the outside of your graphic, you may need to go to selections, selection all. Selections, modify, Contract by 2. Selections invert.

    18. Effects, 3D Effects, drop shadow and use the same settings as before.

    19. Deselect.

    20. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    21. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    22. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    23. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    24. Image, Add border and add a 10 pixel white border.

    25. Select your white border with the magic wand.

    26. Edit, paste into selection.

    27. Deselect.

    28. Image, add border and add a 2 pixel border using your darkest color.

    29. Select the border with your magic wand. If the color you have chosen is also on the outside of your graphic, you may need to go to selections, selection all. Selections, modify, Contract by 2. Selections invert.

    30. Effects, 3D Effects, drop shadow and use the same settings as before.

    31. Deselect.

    32. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    33. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    34. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    35. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    36. Image, Add border and add a 25 pixel white border.

    37. Select your white border with the magic wand.

    38. Edit, paste into selection.

    39. Effects, Texture Effects, Straw Wall and use the following settings:-

      • Blur:      40
      • Density:      1br5
      • Length:      14
      • Width:      1
      • Transparency:      0
      • Color:
      • Click on the color box, then using your eye dropper search for a dark color in your graphic.

      • Angle:      100

    40. Deselect.

    41. Image, add border and add a 2 pixel border using your darkest color.

    42. Select the border with your magic wand. If the color you have chosen is also on the outside of your graphic, you may need to go to selections, selection all. Selections, modify, Contract by 2. Selections invert.

    43. Effects, 3D Effects, drop shadow and use the following settings:-

      • Vertical & Horizontal:      2
      • Opacity:      100
      • Blur:      15
      • Color:      Black

    44. Repeat drop shadow changing your vertical and horizontal to –2 (minus).

    45. Deselect.

    46. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    47. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    48. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    49. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your darkest color.

    50. Image, Add border and add a 1 pixel border using your lightest color.

    51. Image, Resize and resize so your graphic is no wider than 350 pixels.

    52. Adjust, Sharpness, Sharpen.

    53. In your layer palette, right click and promote background layer.

    54. Image, Canvas size and use the following settings:-

      • Width:      1024
      • Height:      Height of your graphic + 40.
      • Placement:      Left middle arrow.

    55. Using your mover tool, move your framed graphic away from the left hand side just a little.

    56. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop Shadow and repeat the two settings that we’ve been using throughout the tutorial.

    57. Add a new raster layer and drag it to the bottom of your layer palette.

    58. Selections, select all.

    59. Edit, paste into selection.

    60. Adjust, Blur, Gaussian Blur and use a setting of 25.

    61. Effects, Texture Effects, Straw Wall and use the same settings as before.

    62. Lower the opacity to a level of your liking.

    63. Effects, Image Effects, Seamless tiling and use the following settings:-

      • Mirror Checked.
      • Bidirectional Checked.
      • Horizontal & Vertical Offset:      0
      • Width:      50

    64. Add a new layer for your watermark and then merge all flatten.

    65. Add a new layer.

    66. Maximize the 2nd image.

    67. Click on your clone tool and select a part of your graphic to clone.

    68. The settings I used are:-

      • Shape:      Round
      • Size:      32
      • Hardness:      50
      • Step:      25
      • Density & Thickness:      100
      • Opacity:      50

    69. Add a new raster layer to our framed image.

    70. Clone the piece of the graphic that you would like to use to the bottom right hand side of your framed image, bring it slightly down and over the frame.

    71. This is really a play around type exercise. If you aren’t happy with the way it turns out, use your back button and just keep trying.

    72. Once you have it the way you like, duplicate the layer, and using your mover tool, move the duplicate down and to the right a little.

    73. Merge all flatten.
