Shadow Side Border

Tools needed to complete this tutorial:
Paint Shop Pro V8
FM Tile Tools
A graphic of your choice.
The graphic I have used is by Jonathon Earl Bowser. You can visit his site by clicking on his banner.

If you have everything you need, let's begin.
- Open a graphic of choice.
- Resize so that it is no wider than 350 pixels, Sharpen if needed.
Note: Graphics larger in length than width are the best ones to use.
- Shift + D twice. Close the original and minimize one of the copies
left open.
- In your layer palette, duplicate the background layer.
- Chose your selection tool set to rectangle. Feather 0 antiaalias checked.
- Click on the custom selection button and use the following settings:-
- Top: 0
- Left: 10 pixels less than the total width of the graphic.
Mine was 350 in width, so this setting became 340.
- Right: Total width of the graphic, so of course, mine was 350.
- Bottom: Total length of the graphic. Mine was 467.
- Click on ok.
- Hit the delete key. It won't look any different at this stage, but you will
see what has happened with the next couple of steps.
- Selections, invert.
- Effects, 3D effects, Drop shadow and apply the following settings:-
- Vertical: 0
- Horizontal: 3
- Opacity: 85
- Blur: 12
- Color: Black
- Shadow on new layer: UNchecked.
- Click ok.
- Your image should look a little like this.

- Back to your layer palette and duplicate copy of background.
- Repeat the custom selection, but change the left to less another 10. Mine became 330,
all other settings stay the same.
- Again hit the delete button.
- Selections, invert and add the same drop shadow as before.
- Deselect.
- In your layer palette, duplicate the copy (2) of background.
- Again, set your custom selection and again, make it another 10 pixels less again on the left.
Mine is now 320.
- Hit the delete key.
- Selections, invert and add the same drop shadow.
- Deselect.
- Merge all, flatten and minimize for now.
- Open the graphic that we minimized at the beginning of the tutorial.
- Adjust, Blur, Gaussian Blur and set to a radius of 10.
- Effects, Art Media Effects, brushstrokes and use Brush strokes4 default settings:
- Click on ok.
- Adjust, Blur, Gaussian blur, and change the radius to 3.
- Effects, Distortion effects, Wave and use the following settings:-
Horizontal displacement:
- Amplitude: 27
- Wavelength: 30
Vertical displacement:
- Amplitude: 50
- Wavelength: 95
Edge Mode:
- Wrap: Selected.
- Click Ok.
- Effects, Image Effects, Seamless tiling and apply the following settings:-
- Tiling Method: Mirror
- Direction: Bidirectional
- Horizontal offset: 0
- Vertical offset: -64 (minus)
- Width: 79
- Click ok.
- Effects, Image Effects, Seamless tiling and apply the following settings:-
- Tiling Method: Edge
- Direction: Vertical
- All others stay the same.
- Effects, Image Effects, Seamless tiling and apply the following settings:-
- Tiling Method: Corner
- Direction: Vertical:
- It will change the vertical offset and transition automatically.
- Click ok.
- In your layer palette, right click on this layer, and Promote background to layer.
Lower the opacity to around 50%
- Merge all, flatten. Minimize for now.
- In your colour palette, change your foreground to pattern, and select the pattern that we've just made.
- Open the shadowed graphic that we made earlier.
- In your layer palette, right click and promote to layer.
- Image, canvas size.
- Make the width 1024, Make the length, the length of your graphic, and click on the left center arrow in the placement box.
Make sure background is set to null.
- Effects, 3D effects, drop shadow and use the same settings as before:
- Close this layer off by clicking on the eye.
- Add a new raster layer and flood fill it with the pattern that we made.
- Layers, arrange, send to bottom, and now click on the eye again to open the top layer.
- Make sure you are on the top layer, and add a new raster layer, and add your watermark.
- Merge all flatten.
- Effects, plugins, FM Tile tools, Seamless tile with the following settings:-
- Border Width: 0.195
- Stretch Control: 0.195
- Vertical: Checked.
- Click on apply.
You can now save this and take it over to Letter Creator. Don't forget to tile the image.
For those who don't know, Letter Creator is a product you get when you have IncrediMail as your
mail program.
