PENCILLED TEXTURE



This tutorial is my own creation. Any resemblance to another is purely co-incidental. Please do not copy, translate or place on any other site. You are more than welcome to use this tutorial in a group setting, but please link to this page only.


Tools needed to complete this tutorial:

Paint Shop Pro V9

A graphic of your choice. A graphic that is much longer than wider will work best for this tutorial.

FM Tile Tools

Due to plugin sites changing constantly, I no longer offer support for them. You will need to do a search to find any plugins that you don't have.


  1. Open your graphic and resize so that it’s no wider than 350 pixels.

  2. Shift + D to duplicate. Close the original.

  3. In your layer palette, right click and promote the background layer.

  4. Right click in your layer palette and duplicate.

  5. Using your selection tool, click on custom selection and use the following settings:-

    • Top:       0
    • Left:       50 less than original graphic width. So if your graphic is 350 in Width, set this to 300.
    • Right:       Total width of your graphic.
    • Bottom:       Total length of your graphic.

  6. Hit the delete button…………you won’t see anything happen as you have another layer underneath, but don’t panic.

  7. Selections, invert.

  8. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop shadow and use the following settings:-

    • Vertical:       0
    • Horizontal:       15
    • Opacity:       65
    • Blur:       10
    • Color:       Black

  9. Deselect.

  10. Image, Canvas size and use the following settings:-

    • Width:       1024
    • Height:       Total height of your graphic.
    • Placement:       Left middle arrow.

  11. In your layer palette, make sure the bottom layer is the active layer.

  12. Effects, Art Media Effects, Black Pencil and use the following settings:-

  13. Detail:      84
  14. Opacity:      68

  15. Lower the opacity to around 85%.

  16. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop shadow and use the same settings as before.

  17. Merge visible.

  18. Add a new raster layer and drag this to the bottom of your layer palette.

  19. Using your eye dropper, chose a colour from your graphic for your background.

  20. Flood fill your new layer.

  21. Effects, Texture Effects, Texture and using the drop down list, chose the Tin foil texture changing the Intensity to 35 and the elevation to 45.

  22. In your layer palette, click on the top layer to make it the active layer.

  23. Click on your selection tool and use the following settings:-

    • Selection type:      Ellipse
    • Mode:      Replace
    • Feather:      25
    • Anti-alias:      check

  24. Draw an eclipse around a part of your graphic that you like.

  25. Edit copy. Edit, paste as a new layer.

  26. Repeat the paste as a new layer two more times.

  27. With your mover tool, move the three new graphics over your background image until you like the placement.

  28. Selections, select none.

  29. Close all layers except the top three.

  30. Making sure one of the top layers is the active layers, merge visible.

  31. Lower the opacity of this layer to around 40%.

  32. Add a new layer for your watermark.

  33. Open all layers.

  34. Merge all, flatten.

  35. Effects, Plugins, FM Tile Tools, Seamless tile and use the following settings:-

    • Border width:      0.105
    • Stretch Control:      0.094
    • Vertical:      Checked
