PENCIL DRAWING



This tutorial is my own creation. Any resemblance to another is purely co-incidental. Please do not copy, translate or place on any other site. You are more than welcome to use this tutorial in a group setting, but please link to this page only.


Tools needed to complete this tutorial:

Paint Shop Pro V 9

A graphic of your choice.

The graphic I’ve used for this tutorial is used with permission from and is copyright to the very talented Sharon George.


A mask of your choice.


If you have everything you need, let's begin.


  1. Open your graphic and resize so that it’s no wider than 350 pixels.

    Note: Graphics that are bigger in length than they are in width will work best with this tutorial.

  2. Shift + D twice to duplicate your image. Close the original.

  3. Edit, copy.

  4. In your layer palette, promote background layer.

  5. In your layer palette duplicate your layer twice so you have three layers.

  6. Close the top two layers by clicking on the eye beside them, and make sure the bottom layer is the active layer.

  7. Effects, Art Media Effects, Charcoal and use the following settings:-

    • Detail:      14
    • Opacity:      58

  8. Open copy of raster and make sure it’s the active layer.

  9. Effects, Art Media Effects, Colored chalk and use the following settings:-

    • Detail:      10
    • Opacity:      91

  10. Lower the opacity of this layer to around 54%

  11. Highlight and open the top layer.

  12. Layers, Load/Save Mask, Load mask from disk and using the drop down menu, find the mask that you’d like to use.

  13. Layers, Merge group.

  14. Effects, Drop Shadow and use the following settings:-

    • Vertical      2
    • Horizontal:      6
    • Opacity:      65
    • Blur:      4
    • Color:      Chose a dark colour from your graphic
    • Shadow on new layer:      Unchecked

  15. Merge visible.

  16. Image, canvas size and use the following settings:-

    • Width:      1024
    • Height:      Original height of your graphic plus 20
    • Placement:      Left middle arrow.

  17. Using your mover tool, move your masked graphic away from the left side just a little.

  18. Repeat the drop shadow but change your horizontal to 8.

  19. Repeat again but this time change your vertical & horizontal to –2 and –6 respectively.

  20. Add a new raster layer and drag it to the bottom of your layer palette.

  21. Selections, select all.

  22. Edit, paste into selection.

  23. Deselect.

  24. Duplicate this layer.

  25. Highlight the bottom layer and repeat the charcoal settings.

  26. Highlight the duplicated layer and repeat the colored chalk settings.

  27. Lower the opacity of this layer to around 48%.

  28. Close the top layer by clicking on the eye beside it.

  29. Making sure one of the background layers is the active layer, merge visible.

  30. Effects, Distortion Effects, Wind and use the following settings:-

    • From Right:      Checked
    • Wind strength:      100

  31. Effects, Image Effects, Seamless Tiling and use the following settings:-

    • Mirror checked
    • Bidirectional checked.

  32. Add a new layer for your watermark.

  33. Merge all, flatten.

    You can now take it Letter Creator, a program that comes with IncrediMail.
