Tools needed to complete the tutorial:

Paint Shop Pro V8

A tube of your choice
The tube I have used for this tutorial is used with permission from McHooii who has kindly allowed me to use her wonderful tubes in my tutorials.


If you have everything you need, let's begin.


  1. Open your tube in PSP.

  2. Using your eye dropper, chose two complimenting colours from your tube, setting your foreground to the darker of the two colours. Change your foreground to gradient and use the following settings:-

    • Angle:      45
    • Repeats:      7
    • Style:      Linear
    • Invert:      Unchecked.

  3. Open a new transparent image, 1024 x 750, raster background, 16 Million colors (24 bit).

  4. Click on your pen tool with the following settings:-

    • Simple mode checked

    • Drawing mode selected

    • Line segments selected

    • Line Style:      Solid
    • Width:      10

  5. View, rulers.

  6. Starting at 50,50, and holding down your shift key, draw a straight line down over the bottom of your transparent graphic.

  7. Again, starting at 50,50, and holding down your shift key, draw a straight line across the transparent image until you get to 500,50.

  8. Effects, 3D effects, Inner Bevel and use the following settings:-

    • Bevel:      1
    • Width:      8
    • Smoothness:      4
    • Depth:      1
    • Ambience:      0
    • Shininess:      40
    • Color:      White
    • Angle:      315
    • Intensity:      43
    • Elevation:      30

  9. Add a new raster layer.

  10. Change your foreground gradient back to colour, and then click on the arrow between the foregound and background colours to reverse them. Again set your foreground to gradient, same settings as before.

  11. Change your line style to Dash Dot Dot, and starting at 70,70 and holding down your shift key, draw a straight line down the length of your transparent image to 500,70.

  12. Again, starting at 70,70 and holding down your shift key, draw a straight line along the width of your transparent image until you get to 350,70..

  13. Effects, 3D Effects and use the same inner bevel as before.

  14. Effects, 3D Effects, drop shadow and use the following settings:-

    • Vertical:       0
    • Horizontal:      5
    • Opacity:       55
    • Blur:      8
    • Color:      Black
    • Shadow on new layer:      Unchecked.

  15. Highlight raster 1, edit, repeat drop shadow.

  16. Merge visible. Name this layer lines.

  17. Maximize your tube and edit copy.

  18. Back to our transparent image, edit, paste as new layer. Resize if necessary.

  19. Using your mover tool, move the tube up to the top left hand corner of your transparent image.

  20. Duplicate the image twice.

  21. In your layer palette, name your layers as such:-

    • Copy (2) of raster 1:      tube 3
    • Copy of raster 1      tube 2
    • Raster 1      tube

  22. With your mover tool, mover tube 2 slightly to the right of the tube.

  23. Layers, arrange, move down.

  24. With your mover tool, move tube 3 slightly over to the right of tube 2.

  25. Move this layer down so that your layer palette reads from top to bottom:

    • Tube
    • Tube2
    • Tube 3
    • Merged.

  26. Close the merged layer and the tube layer. Making sure one of the other layers is highlighted, merge visible. You can now open up the other layers.

  27. Making sure that the merged layer is the active layer, go to effects, Distortion effects, Wind, and use the following settings:-

    • From left checked
    • Wind strength:      50

  28. Repeat the wind, but this time check From right.

  29. Effects, Texture Effects, Fur and use the following settings:-

    • Blur:      26
    • Density:       100
    • Length:      15
    • Transparency:      190

  30. Drop the opacity of this layer to between 30 & 40%

  31. Highlight the top layer (tube) and add the same drop shadow as before.

  32. Edit, repeat drop shadow.

  33. Add a new layer and flood fill with your gradient.

  34. Layers, arrange, send to bottom.

  35. Adjust, Add/Remove noise, Add noise of 10%, uniform and monochrome checked.

  36. Effects, Image Effects, seamless tiling and use the following settings:-

    • Corner checked
    • Bidirectional checked
    • Curved checked.

  37. Lower the opacity of this layer to whatever suits you.

  38. Add a new layer. Layers, arrange, bring to top.

  39. Add your watermark.

  40. Merge all flatten.
