This tutorial is my own creation. Any resemblance to another is purely co-incidental. Please do not copy, translate or place on another site. You are more than welcome to use this tutorial in a group setting, but please link to this page only.

Tools needed to complete this tutorial:-

Paint Shop Pro V8

A tube of your choice.


  1. Open your tube and using your eye dropper chose a complimenting foreground and background colour.

  2. Open a 400 x 400 transparent image.

  3. Click on your selection tool and chose the Hexagon from the selection type drop down menu.

  4. Draw a hexagon about ¼ of the size of our transparent image.

  5. Flood fill with the lighter of the colours that you chose.

  6. Effects, Texture Effects, Blinds and use the following settings:-

    • Width:      3
    • Opacity:       100
    • Color:      The darker color of the two chosen
    • Horizontal & Light from left/top checked.

  7. Leave selected.

  8. Add a new raster layer.

  9. Click on your paintbrush tool with the following settings:-

    • Shape:      Circle
    • Size:      32
    • Hardness:      50
    • Step:      25
    • Density:       100
    • Thickness:      50
    • Rotation:      0
    • Opacity:       50
    • Blend:      Lighten

  10. Using the lighter of your two colours, just dab 7 or 8 dabs around the left upper side of the Hexagon.

  11. Adjust, Blur, Gaussian Blur and use a setting of 10.

  12. Lower the layer opacity to 70%

  13. Merge visible.

  14. Effects, Artistic Effects, Topography and use the following settings:-

    • Width:      7
    • Density:       99
    • Angle:      215
    • Color:      White

  15. Deselect.

  16. Edit, copy. Edit, paste as new layer and move the new Hexagon over to the right and down slightly so only a small portion is covering the original hexagon.

  17. Add a new raster layer.

  18. Click on your selection tool and again draw out the hexagon. I made mine smaller this time.

  19. Flood fill with the darker of your two colours.

  20. Duplicate your layer three times, so you have four layers of your smaller hexagon.

  21. Rename them from top to bottom.

    • Light 1
    • Light 2
    • Light 3
    • Light 4

  22. Highlight the layer named Light 4.

  23. Effects, Illumination Effects, Sunburst and use the following settings:-

    • Color:      White
    • Brightness:      80
    • Horizontal:      15
    • Vertical:      85
    • Density:      50
    • Brightness:      50
    • Brightness:      30

  24. Highlight the layer named Light 3.

  25. Effects, Illumination Effects, Sunburst and use the same as above but change your Horizontal to 85.

  26. Highlight the layer named Light 2.

  27. Effects, Illumination Effects, Sunburst and use same settings as above but change your Horizontal and Vertical to 15.

  28. Highlight the layer named Light 1.

  29. Effects, Illumination Effects, Sunburst and use same settings as above but change your Horizontal to 85.

  30. Deselect.

  31. Right click on the blue header of your tube and copy. You can now close your tube down.

  32. Back to our main graphic, right click on the blue header and paste as new layer.

  33. Image, resize if necessary making sure that all layers is Unchecked.

  34. Rename this layer tube.

  35. In your colour palette make your two colours a little darker than what they are.

  36. Click on your text tool with vector checked.

  37. Chose the font that you would like to use and the size.

  38. Add your text to the text box and click on OK.

  39. While the font is still a vector move it around to where you would like it to be.

  40. Once you are happy with the place, right click in your layer palette and convert to raster layer.

  41. Rename this layer font.

  42. Add a new raster layer. Layers, arrange, send to bottom.

  43. Flood fill with White.

  44. Highlight your merged layer.

  45. Effects, 3D Effects, Drop shadow and use the following settings:-

    • Vertical:       -4 (minus)
    • Horizontal:      8
    • Opacity:       45
    • Blur:      15
    • Color:      Black
    • Shadow on new layer:      Unchecked.

  46. Working your way up the layer palette, hightlight each layer and go to Edit, repeat drop shadow.

    PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

  47. Image, Resize and resize to around 300 pixels, all layers Checked.

  48. Close the following layers:-

    • Light 1
    • Light 2
    • Light 3

  49. Highlight the font layer, right click and merge visible.

  50. File, save as, Image 1 and save in PSP format.

  51. Click on your back button once to show all layers again.

  52. Close the following layers:-

    • Light 1
    • Light 2
    • Light 4

  53. Highlight the font layer, right click and merge visible.

  54. File, save as, Image 2 and save in PSP format.

  55. Hit the back button once to show all layers again.

  56. Close the following layers:-

    • Light 1
    • Light 3
    • Light 4

  57. Highlight the font layer, right click and merge visible.

  58. Files, save as, Image 3 and save in PSP format.

  59. Hit the back button once to show all layers again.

  60. Close the following layers:-

    • Light 2
    • Light 3
    • Light 4

  61. Highlight the font layer, right click and merge visible.

  62. File, save as, Image 4 and save in PSP format.

  63. Minimize paint shop pro for now.

  64. Open Animation Shop and use the following settings:-

  65. Click on the Animation Wizard.

  66. Select Same size as the first image frame and click next.

  67. Click on opaque and make the colour white and click next.

  68. Select Upper left corner of the frame, and with the canvas color and click next.

  69. Select Yes, repeat the animation indefinitely and add 25 into the display space, and click on next.

  70. Click on Add image and find where you saved the 4 images.

  71. Add your images so that they read from top to bottom:-

    • Image 1 pspimage
    • Image 2 pspimage
    • Image 3 pspimage
    • Image 4 pspimage

  72. Then click next.

  73. Click on Finish.
